What is Oral Sex ? “Should I indulge in Oral Sex ?”
S

ex being such a basic desire of every human being, it is bound to be experimented.

oral sex-OExperimentation in Sex in not new! For centuries, it has been experimented… Eg: Kamasutra, which historians believe to have been, composed between 400 BCE and 200 CE (source: Wikipedia).

The picture on the left depicts scenes of Oral Sex on one of the Temple Sculptures in Khajuraho.

Hence trying different facets of enjoying Sex and deriving pleasure come genetically to country like India, but yet forced by our so called moral and cultural boundaries, Sex Experimentation for long has been a taboo… As monks say, always stay a missionary… (Ofcourse I am talking about the position!).

Oral Sex is one such added spice which increasingly turns to be one of the most important part of any successful and fulfilling physical and intimate relationship.

Introduction to Oral Sex:

Essentially oral sex as described by Google is the “sexual activity in which the genitals of one partner are stimulated by the mouth of the other; fellatio or cunnilingus.

Oral Sex is primarily of two kinds: Fellatio (commonly known as Blow Job) or cunnilingus.

As described by Dr. David Delvin (GP and Family Planning Specialist)

“There are two main types of oral sex. Sometimes a couple will engage in both of them at the same time.

Performed on a woman: oral sex given to a woman by her partner (whether male or female) is called ‘cunnilingus’. In old books, you may well see this spelt as ‘cunnilinctus’. Generally, the idea is to kiss and lick all of the vulva, but eventually to concentrate on the area round the woman’s clitoris.

Performed on a man: oral sex given to a man by his partner (again, female or male) is generally termed fellatio, though strictly speaking this word only covers the type of oral caress in which the penis actually enters the partner’s mouth.

Some couples practice cunnilingus and fellatio at the same time. In other words, the man has his mouth on the woman’s genitals, while she has her mouth on his.

This activity is widely known as ‘the 69’ or ‘le soixante-neuf’, because of the notion that when viewed from the side, the couple’s bodies look a bit like the figures ‘6’ and ‘9’.”

Some statistics about oral sex:

According to a survey by India Today Magazine in 2012,

56% of men in small towns have never had oral sex. Assuming in India only the most expressive ones become part of the survey, the number signifies huge ignorance about Oral Sex in India.

According to the UK the National Survey on Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles gave the following percentages about people who have experienced oral sex

  • 71 per cent of 16 to 24 year olds
  • 80 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds
  • 78 percent of 35 to 44 year olds
  • 67 per cent of 45 to 54 year olds
  • 52 per cent of males and 35 per cent of females 55 to 64 year olds
  • 30 per cent of males and 19 per cent of females 65-plus.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports similar percentages.

This clearly signifies that Oral Sex is being widely accepted among Couples as a way to have sex and derive pleasure out of it.

How do Men and Women feel about Oral Sex:

In a  survey by the The-Generous-Husband.com conducted on October 19 2012, they had tried to find out about how Men and Women feel about Oral Sex.

I found the survey worth mentioning, as it gives us an understanding on what Men and Women expect out of Oral Sex.

Myths about Oral Sex

While having Sex, I have always advocated reducing anxieties, nervousness and myths; hence it becomes very important for me to ensure that there is no awkwardness/nervousness regarding Oral Sex.

Oral Sex is Bad:

As quoted in Time of India (leading daily in India),

Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour, fertility expert, Phoenix Hospital, states, “Oral sex is wrongly related to the culture of the country and is not merely considered as an act of pleasure. In India, there’s a lack of education, which has made couples ignorant about oral sex. Young girls often fear pregnancy or might relate their irregular periods to indulging in oral sex, which is untrue as the two have no correlation.”

Dr. Megha Hazuria Gore, clinical physiologist agrees, “For Indians, anything which is done out of the ordinary and is beyond the conservative meaning of sex comes with numerous myths. Likewise, oral sex is not seen as a normal part of sexual interaction and it’s considered to be a pornographic act.”

Two major myths that people have:

Morally and Mythological and Spiritually Oral Sex is Bad: Historians have found mentions and depictions of Couples having Oral Sex. The most known and seen being in Kamasutra and Temples of Khajuraho. So there is nothing wrong in it as far as mythological and moral issues are concerned.

Hygiene Wise Oral Sex is Bad: I have come across queries about Oral Sex being unhygienic. Hygiene completely depends on the personal grooming and living habits of individual.

Research has found that Oral Sex is completely hygienic when practiced regularly with single partner. However it might lead to issues when Oral Sex is experienced with different individuals in a short span of time.

So it completely depends on 1) Personal Hygiene of a Person 2) Loyalty of a Person in the Relationship.

Hence one must not form preconceived notions about it without actually experiencing it.

In case your partner already has some form of Sexually Transmitted Disease, then normal risks of having any form of Sex are applicable.

But despite of the fact that Oral Sex is considered illegal under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, stated as being ‘carnal intercourse against the order of nature’, which does not carry the potential for procreation, it is gaining popularity and believe me you, in my entire practice as sexual therapist, I have not seen a sexually satisfied couple without practicing Oral Sex regularly.

Oral Sex is also a big part of Orgasmic Meditation. I shall be discussing about Orgasmic Meditation as a key to satisfied sexual life with your partner in a separate blog.

Conclusion: Oral Sex is very important for any sexually satisfied relationship. It helps in

  • Couples develop trust among each other.
  • Better orgasm
  • More Fun during Sex
  • Better Understanding among Couples
